Psychology and Computers

June 09, 2024

Technology touches or influences the entirety of modern life and this is no different with regard to psychology. Similar to how technology affects how people behave and think, as well as how they work, psychologists make use of technology to study, understand and even treat mental disorders. The technology also helps psychologists in their research by making it possible for them to collect and analyse data much more quickly and accurately than they would otherwise be capable of. From the use of computers in fMRI imaging to the development of electronic symptom assessments and tracking tools for patients with depression and anxiety, technology is a huge component of psychological treatment and research.

Technology also influences the way that humans interact with the digital systems they interact with every day. A lot of the most well-known technology companies around the globe have large departments staffed by psychologists that are experts in human cognition and perception. They conduct studies to study how users react to certain designs, and offer suggestions based on their findings. In reality, the majority of the time you’re using a piece of technology, be it your phone or Facebook, you’re benefiting from the collaboration between computer science and psychology.

Sidney D’Mello, a researcher at Notre Dame University, is one of the many researchers who work at the intersection of psychology and computers. His research focuses on “affective computing,” which is the study of how computers can detect and interpret emotions. His team, for example has developed a mathematical model that can aid computers in predicting when someone is about to become anxious or frustrated and take appropriate action before the event takes place.
